Metallic Artistry
Ed Crabtree

Handworking  metal has been my trade for over twenty years.  Handmade jewelry has been my passion for the last three.  Ever since my wife asked if  I could maker her some earrings, I’ve been hooked.  I’m hooked on the creative process from which you take an idea and follow it through to a physical piece and hooked on the pleased look of a satisfied customer.

The process starts out with an idea sometimes developed from sketches.  I may take the details to my computer where I may work out drawings of a copyright-free or unique design to transfer to a piece of metal for either cutting or etching.  After the etching or fabrication is finished I use various tools to bring the piece to a finished state, ready for display or purchase.

My favorite metals are Nugold (jewelers brass), copper, and sterling silver.  I buy these in forms such as wire and sheet and sometimes acquire them form local recyclers such as copper sheet from scraps of copper guttering.  I use learned techniques such as fabrication by cutting and soldering and apply textures with hammers, rolling mills, or punches to make each piece  individual and unique.
